Theme Research: Barbed Wire

After some consideration and talking with my tutor, the chosen theme I have decided to explore within this experiment is the form of barbed wires. The razors within the wire create a rough, intimidating and fearful image that makes one think of the consequences should they attempt to deal with these fences.

Barbed wire is a type of fencing that is conventionally used to construct fences to secure off limit areas and secure property. They are typically lined with sharp edges or points (barbs) and with variations including full fledged razor blade trimmings. Animals or humans usually trying to bypass a barb wired fence are usually injured or met with discomfort due to cuts infliced by the sharp edges within the barbed wires.

Barbed wire has often times been used in an unconventional way too such as creating art or objects using the wires to form a structure and even create desired patterns due to it's unique form. The actual aesthetic image of the overall barbed wires will generally cause an unpleasant feeling of 'anguish, fear and danger' when one views it.

This reaction is generally caused by the very nature of barbed wire which is to ward off intruders and create a danger in the sense when one views it. The razors, colour and material all cause an 'intimidating' effect to animals and humans alike as they remind one self the pain these razors can cause but also the fact that they are made from metal which is sturdy and hard to destroy without the use of tools.

Rusted barbed wire fences can cause an even greater fear in humans simply with a change in the materials, it presents to them the possible danger of tetanus should they try to pass through and infiltrate the fence. Through this, we can see that barbed wire is quite a versatile form that can strike different emotions when viewed but can even have it's intimidation value enhanced through the use of different structuring or materials.

Barbed wire shapes can generally be seen in the same sense as fractal forms as it has a recurring pattern that are arranged along the strand in intervals. This is the same sense of reiterating elements of a fractal image to create something different aesthetically when these patterns are fused and rearranged in such a way.
